Search Engine Optimization, aka SEO,
has changed over the years largely based on what Google the search engine does
and how its algorithm works. When Google first started ranking websites it did
not have a sophisticated algorithm that could tell how good a website was and
if it was the best website to display in the top position of its results. So
about 10 years ago Google was using basic algorithms that were more easily
manipulated by people who wanted to rank their websites. This included things
such as on page SEO factors such as Keyword density. Google at that stage was
relying heavily on how often a keyword appeared on a page and the thinking was
that the more often the better. So some webmasters and SEO professionals
started to do what is called “Keyword Stuffing” to achieve high rankings and
this resulted in some cases, poor content quality websites appearing in top of
Google results.
Search
engines like Google and Yahoo also evolved over time so that they could provide
improved lists of the websites that they were delivering in their search
results. The most dramatic change was that Google changed its algorithm to be
one that would use back links as an indicator of how good a website was. So the
more back links from other websites a website had the higher it would rank in
the search engines. Google counted each back link as a vote of approval for
that website by the webmasters of other websites, it was a good theory. So say
website A linked to website B, then Google counted that as a vote of approval
for website B. This worked for a while and allowed Google to deliver up decent
websites in the search results. But over time webmasters and SEO professionals
also started to game this. Whole industries designed to provide back links
sprung up such as blog networks and linking directories. This made SEO once
again a lot easier and meant that people who did SEO back linking would rank
well in the search engines and it brought again the issue of the sites on the
top of the results are not necessarily the site that had the best content or
gave the client what they wanted.
To
combat this Google once again updated its algorithm by bringing out Panda in
late 2011. Panda is a site wide quality score were Google rates how good the
website is based on Onsite factors such as contact pages, site layout etc and
also it factors in user experience using things such as bounce rate, return rate, how many pages were
viewed on the site etc. This means that sites with poor content and poor user
metrics dropped in the search engines and better quality sites once again
started to show in the search results. Google will continue to Tweek its
algorithm to bring searches results and this means SEO will continuously have
to change. The latest SEO ranking factor to influence rankings is social factors now being included in the
Google algorithm. SEO professionals will continue to work out ways to rank their
websites despite Google’s attempts to make search more “natural”. Deemsys Inc feel comfortable by sharing some knowledge about SEO through article...
